Dreamhost or nightmare?

For the past year or so, I have hosted a site through Dreamhost. While the cost is cheap, over time I have come to learn why.

In November, my site was hacked. Nasty little bugger got through some “security” Dreamhost is supposed to be responsible for and corrupted files integrating with a database. Some trojan file had been sent through the system.

That begin said, I had been rolling along for sometime thinking everything was OK, the backup design for Dreamhost while does back things up, but if you wait too long to notice an issue, it is and was too late for me. There was not a backup that I could roll back to and get my site up and running. In other words, I was SOL and had to start from scratch.
Then, in the midst of trying to talk to someone, you can never talk to someone, they only want to email you or refer you to their “wiki”, Dreamhost caused another snafu by double (sometimes triple) charging customers.

In the end, things took too long to fix. Support was slow, even non-existent as they haven’t even assured me that the hack won’t be able to happen again. The billing issue was icing on the cake.

I’m not much of a fan any longer of Dreamhost and have since moved on. I wouldn’t recommend it to others based on the customer service recieved through this experience.
